Create assignment activity


  1. Go to your course and on your course page click on Turn editing on .
  2. Choose on which topic the assignment activity is to be added. Click Add an activity or resource.
  3. From the list of activity or resource, choose Assignment.
  4. On assignment settings pagea couple of options needs to be set in order to create the assignment, below is the list of settings needed to be filled-up and some settings that would be helpful in setting up the assignment: 
    • General 
      • Assignment name (required) - name of assignment to be displayed on course
      • Description - a brief description or can it be an instruction for the assignment
      • Additional Files - can be help, example document, etc. regarding the assignment
    • Availability
      • Allow submissions from - date that the assignment opens for submission
      • Due date - deadline for the assignment
      • Cut-off date - date that the assignment closes for submission
      • Remind me to grade by - date to remind the teacher/s of the course to grade the submissions
    • Notifications
      • Notify graders about submissions - notifies teachers when assignment is submitted
      • Notify graders about late submissions - notifies teachers when assignment is submitted late
      • Default setting for "Notify students" - sets the default setting to notify student when graded
    • Grade
      • Grade - sets the grading type & maximum grade of the assignment
      • Grade method - sets the assignment grading method
      • Grade category - the category on the gradebook you want to set it to
      • Grade to pass - sets the grade/score to pass the assignment
      • Refer to the Setup course gradebook guide to create the grade category.

  5. Click on Save and return to course to save & view the assignment on course, or Save and display to save & have a preview of the created assignment.

Edit assignment activity


  1. Go to your course and on your course page click on Turn editing on.
  2. Find the topic that contains the assignment to be edited.
  3. On the right-side of the assignment to be edited click on Edit and from the drop-down menu click on Edit settings.
  4. Here on the assignment settings page change the information you want changed.
  5. Click on Save and return to course, to save & view the assignment on course, or Save and display, to save & have a preview of the created assignment.

Delete assignment activity


  1. Go to your course and on your course page click on Turn editing on.
  2. Find the topic that contains the assignment to be edited.
  3. On the right-side of the assignment to be edited click on Edit and from the drop-down menu click on Delete.
  4. A pop-up window would appear to confirm the deletion of the assignment, click on Yes to proceed with the deletion.
  5. Click on Turn editing off button to finalize the deletion of the assignment.


WARNING: A deleted assignment will be transferred to the Recycle bin of the course making it possible to restore. However, any content in the Recycle bin will be permanently deleted after 7 days.



Enable assignment group submission


To enable group submission on the assignment the course Group mode must be set and a Grouping must be created on the course, refer to the Group override for course activities & Course groupings guide.


  1. Go to your course and on your course home page click on Turn editing on.
  2. Find the topic that contains the assignment to be edited.
  3. On the right-side of the assignment to be edited click on Edit and from the drop-down menu click on Edit settings.
  4. Scroll down to Group submission settings and expand it. Set Students submit in groups to Yes.
  5. From the new settings that showed up on Group submission settings, change the following:
    • Require group to make submission (Optional) - students not part of a group won't be able to submit
    • Grouping for student groups - sets the groupings for the assignment
  6. Click on Save and return to course, to save & view the assignment on course, or Save and display, to save & have a preview of the created assignment.
